OTTAWA - On yet another sunny Saturday afternoon in Bradenton, FL, Ottawa Fury FC faced off against Icelandic first division Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar (FH) in its last preseason test. The two clubs battled hard in a fast-paced, physical game that saw the Icelandic club snag a tight 4-2 win.

The two clubs exchanged goals, with FH opening the score in the 25th minute of play, only to see Ottawa level up five minutes later. FH would add one more before the half to go into the break up 2-1. Ottawa came out of the half strong, putting on lots of pressure, and tied the game back up in the 57th minute. The Iceland club added two in the last quarter of the match to wrap up the match.

With a successful preseason camp and positive showing in its preparatory matches, Fury FC is ready to get down to business and is set to kick off its 2019 USL Championship season this coming Saturday in Charleston (7:30 p.m.).

STORYLINES

  • Fury FC showed its new-found attacking personality in style, stringing dozens of passes together on most of their possessions and circulating the ball with pace and purpose.
  • Both sides exercised pressure in the opponent’s zone, creating dynamic opportunities for Ottawa on numerous occasions. This meant Fury FC was not only able to maintain possession, but regain it quickly when it did go the other way.
  • Ottawa’s midfielders were excellent on the day, their tireless work orchestrating play and supporting the high pressure being instrumental throughout the match. Amongst the group, maestro Charlie Ward showed tremendous grit and covered a stupendous amount of field while maintaining a cool, calm-headed demeanour. He could also be credited with setting up Haworth for Fury FC’s second goal.
  • The chemistry among the lads in black and red was evident and permeated their play on the pitch. Instincts and tactics melted beautifully, which bodes well for the season to come.

POST-GAME COMMENTS

Head Coach Nikola Popovic
On the game overall… “I think we have to be proud of our players. In such a short period of time here they were able to adapt and we showed that were very organized. We were able to create a lot of chances and we scored two goals. Of course, there are still things that were not perfect […] but we will be ready when the season starts.”

On the opponent and how we matched up… “I don’t think we’ll face this level of play in USL, they are a very good team, and I think we were able to match up with them shoulder to shoulder. Our players are ready, and I think it was a very good performance overall of our team.”

Midfielder Charlie Ward
On the game and the opponent… “I thought we’ve done well. Obviously, we’re not happy to lose in any game, but this is a preseason game and we’re just getting ready for the season next week. But we’re happy of the way we’re trying to play, but we still have things to work on.”

On the play in midfield and how he feels about it… “Yeah, it’s my game! I said when I first came that my game is to get on the ball and organize my team, that’s my job. I could’ve done better things tonight, other players could’ve as well, we’ll look back and get ready for Charleston next week.”
