Julian de Guzman has made his first move as head coach and GM appointing Victor Oppong as the new assistant coach alongside current assistants Jed Davies and Bruce Grobbelaar.
Oppong is a UEFA B licensed coach, but also a former Canadian under-20 and under-23 defender who played in Germany. Oppong and de Guzman have a history together – both natives of Scarborough and both featuring with German-club FC Saarbrücken.
“Victor has spent 15 years playing and coaching in Germany at many levels,” said de Guzman. “He has also represented his national team as a captain and participated in a U20 World Cup. His knowledge and value of the game will be a great addition to the team.”
Oppong brings an interesting resume to the table both as a coach and player. Since 2013, the 36-year-old has coached at VfR Mannheim, TSV Amicitia Viernheim and FC Ziegelhausen. Prior to hanging up his boots, Oppong was a U20 and U23 Canadian International, while also captaining the U20 squad and playing in the U20 World Cup in 2001, and featuring for five second and third division clubs in Germany.
“I am looking forward to the task ahead and excited about working with a great organization like Ottawa Fury FC,” said Oppong.
Oppong is expected to join the club Saturday before making his official debut as an assistant coach on Sunday when Fury FC host Saint Louis FC in a vital contest in the race for the USL playoffs.
Tickets for Sunday's game and all home games are available online at OttawaFuryFC.com/Tickets, by calling 613.232.6767 X1 or in person at The Box Office at TD Place.
