Ottawa Fury FC have solidified their depth in goal with the addition of Canadian David Monsalve the club announced Monday, pending league and federation approval.

“David is another Canadian that brings quality and experience to his position,” said Fury FC General Manager Julian de Guzman. “We have gathered a talented group of players and are looking forward to seeing what each of them contribute to the club’s success.”

Born in North York, ON, to Colombian parents, Monsalve, initially brought in as an injury relief player by Toronto FC in their inaugural season in 2007, created soccer history when he became the youngest goalkeeper to ever play in MLS – a record that still stands – at 18 years old (18 years 7 months and 8 days).

While he only played one match with The Reds, he went on to appear in over 120 matches across Finland, Colombia, Guatemala, and Canada – where he suited up for FC Edmonton for two seasons (2011-2012).

Monsalve also featured in 20 youth Canadian National Team matches and represented Canada in the 2008 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament.

“This an opportunity to be a part of something historic, with the amount of Canadians on the team. We have a lot to prove and I want to be a part of that,” commented Monsalve. “If you look at the roster, the coaching staff, guys I’m familiar with; to continue my career in an environment I feel very comfortable in only makes sense.”

The addition of Monsalve firms up Ottawa’s last line of defense, making it an all-Canadian affair with Callum Irving and Maxime Crépeau already battling for the starting role.

Ottawa Fury FC will begin its fifth season Saturday, March 17 in Charlotte against the Independence (7 p.m.), and play its home opener five weeks later on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. when North Carolina FC visits TD Place.
